Jaguar workers vote for efficiencies

Jon Griffin, Birmingham Post

Jaguar workers have backed a crucial blueprint for the future of Birmingham’s Castle Bromwich factory in a key shopfloor ballot – clearing the path for up to 5,000 jobs.

Workers at the Birmingham plant reversed a previous ballot result by a 72 per cent vote in favour of new workplace efficiencies, including some compulsory Saturday working.

The result, with 1,467 in favour and 582 against, paves the way for a £200 million investment in the ageing factory, a new model and long-term security for the plant.

Unite regional officer Tim Parker said: “This is fantastic news for the future of Castle Bromwich. The workforce have come out fighting and expressed their confidence in the plant.

“We can say quite clearly that there are 1,000 new jobs at least in terms of Castle Bromwich and that knocks through to the component supply industry on the basis of three or four to one. This is a great result.”
